Explore San Miguel
Brief Itinerary
History, Art & Architecture:

Nestled on a hillside in the highlands of the
Chichimeca region of Guanajuato state, the
birthplace of Mexican independencand
hometown of revolution hero Ignacio
Allende, San Miguel was made an official
UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Due to
the rightly preserved colonial past that you
can perceive and experience throughout
this area of central Mexico, it has been a
place of refuge for artists, writers and
ex-patriots since the 1950s and the
metalwork and jewelry that built these
cities along the old royal silver highway still
attract tourists from all over the world.

San Miguel is a picturesque colonial town of cobblestone streets and a rich tapestry of color that makes it far prettier than any postcard could capture. Filled with world class restaurants, spas, and shops - from clothing and furnishings to please the most discerning to open-air markets with remarkable buys on everything from jewelry and pewter to pottery and ironwork. It is an unforgettable destination for discerning travelers - a jewel nestled in the mountains.

The high desert environment that sheds a special light for painters and the culinary classics this region has to offer make your time here both satisfying and relaxing while you soak in the history, art and architecture of hundreds of years of colonial heritage.

Frontier Region of the Ancient Toltec

The pre-hispanic history of this land becomes your focus of wonder when you realize that the ancient Toltecs, the forefathers of the Aztecs and an advanced society ruled by god-kings like Quetzalcoatl, once ruled over this land where the Chichimeca tribes came to build pyramids and sunken patio structures that monitored and emulated the forces of nature around which they pattered their lives.

Meet your Guide!

“Alberto”, born and raised in the U.S. and a
graduate of Louisiana State University in
Anthropology and Geography, he worked in his
chosen field for several years in the
southeastern U.S. But having been trained by
some of the leading researchers in the field of
Mesoamerican and Central American archaeology and cultural geography, his dream to live in Latin America was realized in 2003 when he moved to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and became part of a Mexican archaeological team excavating the ruins just outside of town of an ancient ceremonial center once ruled by the Toltecs.

He has taught English at schools in both the center of the republic and in Oaxaca where he was the director of the language center at the University of the Sea on the Pacific coast. While there he studied the indigenous culture and helped to conserve a Zapotec/Mixtec hilltop fortress that had been under siege by looters.

During the six years he has lived in Mexico, he has traveled and researched extensively all of the major and many minor archaeological sites and has been through virtually every region of the country, including forays into Belize and Guatemala. He currently conducts workshops at the Instituto Allende on the Prehispanic Cultures of Mexico and lives in San Miguel with his wife (whose family has been there for many generations) and two young children.

His expertise in the area and fluency in Spanish is invaluable for those wishing to fully appreciate the richness of culture this region of Mexico has to offer.
